Taylor Swift plays KeyArena

Sometimes it's easy to forget that pop-country singer Taylor Swift, who plays the Key tonight, is only 19 years old.

She was No. 4 on a list of top-earning country stars in 2008, according to Forbes, behind much-older men, including Kenny Chesney, the guys from Rascal Flatts and Toby Keith. Swift also sold more albums in 2008 than any other recording artist, writes all her songs and recently graced the covers of both Rolling Stone and Allure.

And if you get her talking about her music career, well, that's when you really forget how old she is. Swift is, first of all, extremely humble about the whirlwind upward spiral her career has taken over the past few years.

"It's been a gradual climb," she said earnestly during a recent conference call from Jacksonville, Fla. No need to mention that her first, self-titled album spawned a handful of hit singles and has surpassed quadruple platinum (4 million sales) status.

Swift takes on the air of a wizened music veteran when she talks about how she shapes her performances, too.

"I feel so lucky I've been able to perform in every size venue on the way up," she said. Swift credits those early and smaller performances with helping her now work her way through a tour of sold-out arena shows. "You learn how to adjust your set list and how you talk to an audience," she said. "It's one of my favorite things to study, how different performers address a crowd. I always watch other performances."

A rapt audience will no doubt be following Swift's every move at her upcoming Seattle show. Like most of her gigs across the country, the KeyArena show is sold out.

"I'm so excited about it," she said, when asked about the show and current tour. "It's what I've dreamed about since I was a little girl. I planned it out, down to every single thing that I do. I'm completely obsessed with this tour." (OK, maybe that last part is a bit 19-year-old-ish.)

Swift said she puts every single emotion she has into the show, described by press materials as clocking in at nearly two hours, during which time the lithe teen plays seven different instruments and changes costumes eight times. It will include a second-act acoustic set, original video elements and a fairy-tale castle lit by more than a million lumens of light. (OK, maybe the latter is fit for a 19-year-old.)

Swift said she's designed this show to be akin to concerts she's enjoyed by country stars such as Reba McEntire and Shania Twain. "I love going to shows where I feel like I've gotten to know that person altogether, where they tell stories about what they wrote that song about," she said, and it's enhanced with extras like videos that help tell a story.

To ensure her fans get the chance to hear those stories and see her, Swift requested $20 tickets be made available for the tour.

"It was really important to me to keep my prices affordable," she said. "You look around and it's impossible to ignore what's going on with the economy now. I'd rather have people walk away and go, 'Wow, I got more than what I paid for.' It's a big priority to me to say, 'Thank you' to the fans that got me here. I'm going to spend my whole life trying to think of ways to say thank you to them."
